Recently, I watched a Youtube video from an entrepreneur named Gary Vaynerchuk. I have been a fan of his for a while and have been truly inspired by his thinking, his drive, and his accomplishments. Born in the Soviet Union, he and his family moved to the US when he was a young boy. He grew his father’s liquor store business from $3 million in annual sales to $50 million by taking the business online and creating Youtube content around wine to aggressively grow sales. Later, he started his own company, Vaynermedia, a social media brand consulting agency. He produces a lot of great Youtube content, speaks at various events, and actively engages people with social media.
Even though I grew up with the internet, I had no idea that it could be a way to replace the typical 9-5 work day. Growing up in this society, we are conditioned to think that the only way to make money is to get a full-time career and collect a paycheck. Taking the entrepreneurial route is supposedly much riskier and involves a tremendous amount of talent, time, and luck. However, after reading all these blogs online and seeing all the different ways of making money out there, my beliefs have changed. While I do think that you need talent, time, and luck, I think it is more important that you have figured out how to contribute value to other people’s lives through your own passions and interests. You don’t need a genius IQ or the luck of a lottery winner. You don’t even need to dedicate 80 hours a week to your business. You just need to know yourself very well, know what you like, and figure out a way to use that to deliver value to the right people.
Here’s the link to a video that Gary Vaynerchuk recently produced with some great wisdom. I encourage you to take a look at this video and some of his other videos as well:
“If you are complaining, then you got to audit yourself, you can’t watch House of Cards, you can’t play ball all day, you can’t go to ballet shows, you got to work. Your grandpappy didn’t have Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook...You can make money in your underpants when you get back home from your waitress job. When you got no money, you got one thing, your TIME. If you’re complaining, you got your time.” Gary Vaynerchuk
What Does It Mean?
How exactly can you make money by just being on social media? Isn’t Instagram and Facebook just for entertainment and a giant waste of time? Isn’t it for people to waste time when they are bored? Don’t people burn away hours of productive time on their phones going through people’s Facebook feeds or looking at Youtube videos?
Well, that is exactly why there is a market opportunity. These are platforms where people spend hours a day on. Therefore, if you can figure out a way for people to spend hours a day on content that YOU produce, advertisers, marketers, and businesses will pay you money if you can earn them money. It is as simple as that.
There are people producing Youtube videos teaching you how to apply your makeup, motivating you to work out, teaching you how to cook, teaching you how to play the guitar, helping you relax with funny animals, and countless other topics. Businesses are using social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest to promote their products and services with strategic images and comments. These are all tools to attract attention and grow a user base. If you can figure out where your passion and interests intersect, you can use that to create a following. Then, you can monetize that following through advertising and product promotion. If you get involved with affiliate sales, every product that you sell through your website or social media platform will earn you a certain commission (10%-30% usually).
The Underlying Message
Sure, Gary Vaynerchuk figured out a way to grow his father’s wine business with Youtube. He created videos to engage people by educating them about wine. As a result, they were more likely to purchase wine through his father’s store. That is a very specific example. The lesson that I want all of you to learn is that there are unlimited ways to make money, especially when you open up your mind to creating a side business. We live in a world where almost everyone is connected through the internet. That means you can reach almost any demographic by just sitting at home. With the worldwide reach of the internet combined with unique value that you can add to people’s lives, there’s no reason why you can’t make money working for yourself. Sure, it takes time, skill, patience, and some luck. But never before has it been so easy and achievable to make money in creative ways. The money you make through your own side business may even allow you to quit your day job and help you reach financial independence early. Previously I wrote about creating your ideal life. Well, creating your own revenue streams through a side business is one way to do it.
If you are employed, most of you had to undergo some type of training to develop the skills necessary to be productive. That fact remains the same if you were to create your own revenue streams online-you still need to learn the skills necessary before you can start generating money. If you are interested, you’ll need to learn about the tools that are out there to help you bring your unique value proposition to other people. In other words, you need to learn the tools that will help you get your products, ideas, and services out to people who are willing to pay for what you have to offer.
I’ve listed some tools below that may aid you in getting your own business started. This is just a small sample of the thousands of amazing tools available at your disposal. As long as you can figure out the value you can deliver, there is a tool out there to deliver it to the right people. I hope that the tools I have listed below can get you off to a good start!
