Have you ever been around someone who is always negative? Someone who complains about everything? How do you feel around this person? Probably not so great. You probably want to avoid this person at all costs. You’re most likely less productive, less social, less creative, less committed, and less likely to do well around this person due to all the additional emotional barriers that arise.
Even worse, do you currently have a very negative, pessimistic mindset? Your job performance, productivity, and health are probably suffering. You’re probably not happy at work either. In a 2010 Journal of the Association for Psychological Sciences study, lower job satisfaction led to lower bottom-line performance.
On the other hand, being around positive people and maintaining a positive mindset yourself can do wonders for your career and life in general. So how does having a positive mindset and positive energy help you exactly?
When you are have a positive mindset, you are more likely to enjoy your work. You are more likely to produce at a higher quality as well. Your mind will be thinking, “I can do this, let’s go!” With that kind of positive attitude, you’ll be able to tackle a lot more issues. In the business world, almost everything can be resolved one way or another. Having the right mindset will allow you to perceive of the possible solutions and motivate you to take the necessary steps.
I noticed that drinking a cup of coffee in the morning gets my mind in a positive state. I’m able to complete a lot more work in those morning hours with the right mindset.
Your creativity is also enhanced when you are in a positive mindset. You’re more likely to look for different ways to do something. You’re more likely to believe in yourself and have the confidence to take bold risks. If you are negative, you’ll most likely assume that something won’t work or is not worth your time.
If you are a positive person, you’ll be more genuinely friendly to others. You’ll be more talkative and social. You’ll say “hi” and “good morning” to people around you. Other people will perceive you in a much more positive light. You’ll more likely be promoted and offered different positions just because people like being around you.
A negative mindset is bad for your health. I truly believe that there is a causal relationship between your mental/emotional state and your physical health. I believe that extended periods of negativity, stress, and depression will take a toll on your body and your physical health. Therefore, it is important to deal with your stress and negativity in a healthy manner and maintain a positive outlook.
