Most of us have goals in life and want to do better for ourselves and for our families. If we’re lucky, we have 80 years on this planet. It is our own responsibility to make the most of the circumstances that we were given. Unfortunately, many people don’t know how to set goals, don’t know how to execute on them, or aren’t able to follow through with them. From my experience, I have found several guidelines I follow to achieve my own goals. Here they are.
1. Develop the Right Habits
Creating habits that automatically bring you closer and closer to your goals is a very powerful way of effecting positive change. It allows you to direct your energy, time, and focus properly. Think of these habits as a GPS that guides you towards your goal regardless of where you are. If you program your mind the right way, the results will follow.
2. Tie Your Goals to Effort and Not Outcome
You have minimal control over whether or not you achieve your intended results. You might not hit that 5 minute mile or get that promotion by next year. However, you have full control over the effort you put in. So, tie your goals to something that you do have control over, such as the amount of time and effort you put in.
3. Forget About the Results
Even better yet, forget about the results themselves and just focus on the positive habits. If you keep going in a positive direction, you’ll be surprised at how much you can achieve. Never forget to enjoy the journey.
In order for you to achieve anything on a consistent basis, you need to have self-belief. Anyone who is successful at anything needs to have self-belief. Emphasize those beliefs in whatever way works for you. It will bring you much greater confidence and assurance in your journey towards your desired outcomes.
5. Surround Yourself with the Right People
Having positive, supportive people around you can give you the right motivation, inspiration, and drive to go after what you want. On the other hand, if you are surrounded by negative people who don’t believe that you will succeed, you will most certainly be dragged down by them. Surround yourself with the right people to create an environment that will support your growth.
